Costumes + Europe = Ridiculousness

Well!

The theme of the big Threefold Holiday Party has been announced.

The Roaring 20s

The guys are already planning their zoot suits, the girls are online looking for slutty flapper girl dresses (becuase a costume isn't a costume in 2007 unless it's slutty).

Now, if I were in the States, I probablly wouldn't be bothering with a costume. In fact, most of the office wouldn't be bothering with a costume. However, I'm in Europe, in the very heart of "fancy dress" wearing--England and Ireland.

No one likes dressing up like these folks over here. Dads dress in drag to embarass their kids, Reality show contestants are made to wear animal costumes for no reason, girls dress up in matching costumes (meter maids, nurses, cowgirls, you name it) on bachelorette or "hen nights", and at Christmas, the whole of the two countries pop on paper crowns while they eat their holiday turkey.

These folks dress up ON A DIME. They love it! First of all, they think it's WAY funnier than it actually is. Put a wig on and these guys will laugh for hours. Secondly, they get this "let loose" attitude when they're in costume. The most straight-laced old man from the country will find himself dancing on tabletops once he's got his wife's high heels and stockings on. It is incredible what effect costume has on them all.

So okay, "Roaring 20s". I'm going to get to work making my own dress over the next few weeks. It'll be a fun project, and, come party time, it'll save me the bother of the ultimate fancy dress tabboo: Arriving in the same costume as someone else.

Becuase no party, no matter how wild, needs two Betty Boops or Claudette Colberts.
