There are many different levels of excitement:
There's anticipation.
There's enthusiasm.
There's elation.
And then there is whatever I am feeling for 2008 St. Paddy's Day.....IN IRELAND.
Last year on Paddy's Day I had just found out I'd be moving to Dublin. This year I'll be sitting in my apartment window as the Paddy's Day parade passes down my street.
And in Ireland, March 17th isn't just a day to down a green Miller Light or two. This is a full blown war on sobriety. And living in Temple Bar, I'm at ground zero.
The plan on Saturday morning is to wake up, walk downstairs to the Foggy Dew (our local pub--cuz we share our floor as its ceiling) and get a couple of pints and bring them back upstairs. Crossing our laneway in the thick of the celebrations is said to take upwards of 25 minutes due to the crowds, but I'll battle it out to walk around town and get a taste of what mayhem feels like.
I've seen some crazy displays of drunkenness since I've been here. The Irish take drinking to a whole new level, it's true. I've seen my alleyway filled to the brim with keg empties from the Foggy Dew every Tuesday morning. One pub. One alley. Filled. I've seen 5 bar fights in one night. I've been out drinking til dawn 3 times in the last year...the first 3 times in my life. And then there's the stories of men turning into drunken gerbils, women drunkenly breaking their legs, my apartment door coated in puke, and if you're ever in Dublin, you can walk around with me at 2am on a Saturday and witness each and every corner of the street magically becoming a private urinal for multiple men at one time. On my lane alone I saw 7 guys peeing in 7 different corners one Sat. night. Unbelievable.
So, given that those are events that naturally occur every weekend and most week nights around here, what in God's name will Paddy's Day be like? The best guess I can hypothesize is it'll be like Mardi Gras....only drunker. I know, I didn't think it was possible either.
Anyway, get ready for the pictures from this weekend. This is going to be fun. Only one more day to go...
