Amsterdam, Den of Sin

I'm back from Sodom and Gomorrah. Good to be back! I desperately want a shower and a church.

GOOD LORD, AMSTERDAM! That place is boooooooonkers. It's everything you hear about x10. The women in the red light district dance in the windows in glowing bikinis and touch themselves for passersby and men just slip in the room and shut the door and the woman pulls the curtain and then, I dunno, I guess they start their game of chess or whatever it is they do in there. :o

The "koffee shops" are where people buy the soft drugs, which are found throughout the red light district. They are very safe and controlled, actually--I was impressed by this. People pay a few € for a joint and sit and have a cup of coffee and then head out. Still, sitting with a cup of coffee and watching someone light a giant joint next to you at 12 noon---that's crazy to watch.

Everywhere you go there are magazines with neked people, stores with pot growing in the windows, near-neked women dancing for money in the doorways, live sex shows, halucenogenic mushroom shops, and amidst all this, people are calm, subdued, behaved. It's that "controlled chaos" you hear about sometimes.

Yet despite all these sins, only one became my true downfall:
Holy hips and thighs, that's a good looking pastry.

Anyway, aside from all the virulent debauchery, Amsterdam is a lovely city. It is circumsected by a series of canals, causing most streets to face a canal and therefore be really, really scenic. There are a lot of sites including the Van Gogh museum, Anne Frank's house and the Rijksmuseum with hundreds of paintings from the Dutch Masters including Rembrandt, Vermeer, Frans Hals and more. This was probably my favorite thing on the trip...I know, I'm a granny, what can I do!

The city is beautiful, and I have to admit, there is something for everyone:

pretty tulips.

dirty sex street.

Another great vacation. :) Pictures posted tomorrow along with a few fun anecdotes!
