Squiffy

Would you believe it? I forgot my Amsterdam photos again! Don't worry tho, they're not that great. 3 days of clouds, rain, and drug-addled travelling partners did not make for fabulous photography.

A couple of things I've learned about Irish language/culture in the last couple of months:

1. Boldest of the family: If your second toe is longer than your first, the Irish would say you're "the boldest of the family". Boldest means most ill behaved. I don't know why they say this. They don't know why they say this. But if you know me, you know that by this standard I am nowhere NEAR the boldest. ;)

2. Bold: When a child does something bad, his mother wags his finger at him and says, "bold, bold!"

3. Kithogue: Left-handed in Irish. Both cursed and lucky. Many more people are left-handed here than in the US.

4. Coins: At an Irish burial, it's common practice to drop a few coins in the cemetary well on your way out. This derives from an ancient pagan ritual where the living gave the dead money to spend in the afterlife, though today few Irish people could tell you why they do it, they just do it.

5. Ta Chuck: A slang way of saying thank you (comes from cockney rhyme)

6. Wagon: A beyotch. Always female.

6. Donkey's age: A long time. e.g.: "Haven't seen him in donkey's/donkey's age." Can also say "yonks" for short, as in, "Haven't seen him in yonks."

7. Some cockney rhyming slang for you. If it doesn't appear clever and funny to you, don't worry, me neither:
  • Scratcher is bed (as in scratchy straw mattress)
  • Maggie Thatcher is bed (rhymes with scratcher)
  • Joe Maxi is taxi
  • Rabbit and Pork is talk ("She's always rabbiting!")
  • Skin and Blister is sister
  • Trouble and Strife is wife
  • Sky Rocket is pocket
  • China Plate (or just china) is mate

I was on a site just now to see if I could find anything more about lefty's in Ireland. Check out this grid of lefty nicknames:

And to think, I was so closed to being called "Squiffy".

Ha! That's pretty funny!

Okay, I'm off to the shop to get something lettucey. It's day 3 of super-healthy-Kate and so far, so good! Last night I had baked chicken breast with portobello mushrooms and asparagus. It totally wasn't as good as a big ol lasagna, but I figure if I do any more of that kind of eating, I'll likely start beeping when I back up.

Tonight, thai lettuce wraps and a 4k run. Tomorrow, the world. :)
