Well I got back from Frankfurt last night and I have to tell you, I had a great time. The city is very festive, the Christmas Markets are absolutely stunning, and above all it was great catching up with Sarah! Check out the pictures here:
On Thursday I got in and Sarah made a delicious little French quiche/tarte dish. If you haven't met Sarah before, she was an exchange student from France and lived with my family for a year. Ergo, she cooks French food. This dish was super easy, super fast and super cheap and was very very tasty. Maybe you want to give it a try:
Sarah's Winter Tartin
- Puff Pastry/pie crust dough
- Jar mushrooms
- Package sliced deli ham
- Package grated swiss cheese
- Beschamel sauce (flour butter milk salt pepper)
Put 1 sheet puff pastry on the bottom of a glass baking dish. Add beschamel, ham cut into small pieces, drained mushrooms and swiss cheese, cover with a second pastry piece, bake 20-30 mins.
You could do a million variations on that dish as well I'm sure. In fact, let me know if you do adapt it!
Friday I went shopping all day and bought the farm. I spent hours in H&M, Zara and Mango, all of which I adore. Then I went to the markets (Wienachtsmarkt) and walked around munching pretzels (brezel), bratwurst, and candied almonds (mendeln).
That night Sarah and I went out with her friends, an international bunch from Italy, France, Germany, Spain, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina and then me, USA! Everyone at the table was bilingual, most were tri- or quadrilingual. One girl knew all 5 languages at the table. It was absolutely amazing to sit there at dinner and watch people shifting languages as they turned to talk to other people. I was so impressed! Also we had huge German meals of wiener snitzel and spaetel and wurst and beer, so I was very impressed with that too, haha.
Sarah also took me out with her friends to try Gluewein, or hot mulled wine, a German specialty. It's so nice to sip on in the cold outdoor markets. We also visited Mainz, a small city west of Frankfurt, for a sampling of what smaller villages do for Christmas. We had a fantastic weekend overall and I am more than ready for the holidays now!!
Have a good Monday!
As you can imagine
