Back in Action!

No blog Friday, I know--it was more than hectic around here. But it's Monday and I'm back in action!

This weekend was very nice. Friday and Saturday I had to work late, but the upside of it was that the company gave me a brand new laptop! It’s an IBM Thinkpad, which is another way of saying “all office laptops everywhere”. But it’s great, and it’s got a DVD player and my buddy an admin is going to activate the wireless card in it for me later this week. So that’s pretty cool!
Anyway, the computer led to me finding myself in a very American situation. Saturday morning I got up early and took my work over to Starbucks and cranked it out. I felt like such a douche sitting there with my laptop and my latte, but it was a nice treat! It just made me think back to all those sorostitutes who would sit in the cafés in Ann Arbor with Ugg Boots and Von Dutch hats (lol, that got old fast!) and Longchamp bags and fake-type their papers while they real-flirted with fraterni-jerks. But I am none of those things, to be sure, so anyway it was nice to sit out and people watch and get work done.
Then Saturday night I went to Malahide to visit Fiona. Malahide, for those of you who aren’t familiar, is an ADORABLE costal village in north Co. Dublin. It is very moneyed and is home to most Dublin celebrities. Also, it is a frequent winner of Tidy Towns, Ireland’s heated annual competition for the cutest, cleanest town in Ireland. It has a castle and a harbour and it is altogether like stepping back in time. Here’s me running around timeless Malahide this weekend in my one-piece jumper:

It’s like time is stood still here in Ireland.

Okay, maybe that was the only pic I could find of downtown Malahide. Sue me.

LOL, anyway, Fiona and I hung out for awhile then went to Gibneys, the Malahide watering hole:

Unfortunately every mouth in need of watering was in Gibheys that night. It was so packed you could hardly breathe. Let me tell you why it was so full—you’re going to love this—there was a Pink concert on at Malahide Castle that night. PINK. Pink, what are you doing here? And why are people still watching you? Your crowd was a hazard to myyyyself. (uck, I can’t believe I just did that)

Anyway Saturday I woke up early and walked all around sunny Malahide. I walked through the harbour and around the coast and beach and up through the little village streets with the baskets of flowers hanging from the storefronts. It was nice. Then I got a call from a friend at work who coordinate’s the executive team’s season tickets to sporting events, and she said they had given up their GAA tickets and she was sending me two! Yay! So I invited Lotta and we headed out to Croke Park to watch Dublin vs. Offaly.

Dublin is a great team, and Offaly are not a great team. But also, Offaly are jerks. This is Gaelic Football:

Hotchi Motchi! It’s basically everything you can’t do in other sports, rolled into one. You can hold the football, you HAVE to drop it and pick it up every 5 steps to keep it in play, you can grab shirt to get the ball from someone, slide tackling is encouraged, and best of all [and this is how you know I’m a hockey fan], fights are totally allowed. There were like 5 fights yesterday. It’s funny, because you see the fight start, and you see it get crazy, and then you see one guy just drop and land passed out cold, then the announcer says “Substitution, number 23, Ciaran Kelly!” and a fresh guy runs out while the other leaves on a stretcher.

So it was fun and I got home in time for some Friends (pre-Monica-and-Chandler episodes; very old) and some studying up on Paris. Paris is only 3 days away—I leave Thursday!! I’m so excited, I can’t wait!!!!!

And lastly, the Overheard in Dublin of the day [Background: Lidl and Aldi are supermarkets]:

While sitting upstairs on the 77 bus (air full of hash smoke
as usual) we pass by the new Lidl supermarket on the Greenhills rd.

Stonded guy #1: "Look ders de new Lidl!"

Stonded guy #2: "Ah yeah, der popping up everywhere."

Stonded guy #1: "Is it Liddle or Leedle or Lydle?"(They ponder on this for a couple of seconds

Stonded guy #2: "I dunno but I know de other one's called Aldi"

Stonded guy #1: "..anyway the beer's durt cheap it is...."

LOL, "stonded"
