Another gorgeous day in Dublin! I’m thinking about the trips I have planned and I’m a little concerned about language barriers. For some reason, we as Americans have this universal misconception that all Europeans speak some English. This is not necessarily true. We also all seem to believe that we can scrape by in countries without knowing the language. What is this? Who came over and spoon fed us these lines? What foolish notions lead us to believe that the American tourist will end up on top?
Look, I started investigating my trip to Copenhagen yesterday. I’m travelling with Shayna in August, and we thought it best to start planning now. I dropped in to the Danish bus website to book my ticket from the airport. I clicked the little UK flag for language. Here’s where that got me:
Do I want antal rejsende? How do I feel about vaelg billettype? "Standard" seems like the default, but what sort of perks do I get with DSB 1? Is that a hot towel and the steak tartar dinner plate?
I guess I had naively thought that Danes speak great English. I’ve met Danes who speak great English. I heard somewhere that the Scandinavian countries are really good at teaching English. But man, if I get to Denmark and I’m expected to know what an “antal rejsende” is…I’m screwed.
Well, so, that’s that. On another front, Andy got a Lexus IS250, officially making him the least likely Texan of anyone I know! But all the same, it’s really pretty and I bet he’s having a ton of fun in it. Here he is posing next to it like an Auto Show hoe hehe jkjk
Well, so, last night Fiona came over and we went shopping and had dinner. She introduced me to this store called Argos, which anyone over here would think is really funny, because it’s the equivalent of someone in the States saying “she introduced me to something called ‘Wal Mart’”. But here’s the thing: Argos is this 2,000 page catalog. You walk into this teeny store, flip through the catalog to see what you want, then order it up from the front desk and someone brings it out to you. They have everything—furniture, electronics, jewelry…it’s basically a Costco in a catalog. It’s really awesome. Anyway, I took their “product directory” home last night and sifted through it. It weighs about 12lbs, but it is 12lbs of awesome. http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Home.htm
Lastly, at about 10pm I went for a walk, because that’s sunset time around these parts and it was a nice sunset last night. Yeah, these are really long days around this time of year. When I get up at 8, the sun has been up for 3 full hours, and it doesn’t get fully dark until 11:30pm. I was here until December last time so I should remember, but I wonder if the winter has just the most depressing, dark times.
Anyway, tonight I’m going to the crepe restaurant Lemon with Kate so she can pick up her luggage and tell me about her rendezvous a la Lyon…Oh boy Oberto!
