Back on the Mainland

Just got in last night from the Aran Islands and Connemara. That was a drop dead gorgeous trip. The island is something out of another century. There are farmers sowing potatoes, roosters crowing from rock walls, ring forts from before Christ, and people speaking the near-forgotten language of Gaelic in all corners of the island.

We stayed on Inis Mor, the largest of the 3 Aran Islands. To give you an idea of their size, Inis Mor has 800 islanders and 60 cars, and their "town" is 4 buildings lining a one-lane street. By comparison, the second biggest island has 3 cars. Inis Oirr, the smallest, has none.

The islands are small and rocky, and though they are actively farmed, the ground only has 3 inches of soil. The rest is rock. Rock, rock and rock. Fields of rock are walled off by rocks. You know, so that your rocks don't run off on you. The buildings are made of rock and the streets are too. In fact, if you visit the island, the 3 things you will encounter most are seaweed, cows, and R-O-C-K-S.

This was SUCH a nice trip to jumpstart my month o' trips! I flew into Galway on Friday evening in a tiny scary prop jet. Just to give you an idea of what the Galway airport is like: I landed in a field with sheep, blocked off by a rock wall, and the plane was towed to the hanger by a tracker. Then we stayed in Galway Friday night, and went to the island Saturday, leaving Sunday and touring Connemara and a couple of castles for awhile until I had to fly back.

Ah! Ireland! It's so gorgeous! You'd love this country. I mean it. So check out the pictures posted on picasa and get inspired to come and visit!

Hope you had a great weekend. Good Monday!
