From inside The States, it's hard to know what an impact your vote has. There, it's hard to see who the rest of the world was rooting for.
I want to show you how much our vote has and will effect the rest of the world. Here are today's headlines from around the planet.
We made the right choice. Only 75 more days before Obama takes office.
Now, as for how to celebrate an election in Ireland? Well, I made a mini Thanksgiving dinner and had my friend Claire over, and she and Stephen and I hung out until the results shows began at 11pm our time. Results started flowing in around 12:30 or so and by 3:30am it was safe to say who the winner was. At 4am when California was announced, everyone knew, and we could all finally sleep easy.
Today the atmosphere in Ireland is pure Obama mania. Everyone is talking about it, stopping people on the street to ask about it. Yesterday at the sandwich shop a man heard my accent and asked "Who did you vote for?", not being rude but just being curious. The general reaction is one of relief that Obama won. This is how they see McCain and Obama (I'm just repeating what I hear over and over): They generally think that McCain is oldschool politic and Obama is a fresh change, so they back Obama.
In fact, today David Cameron, MP of British Conservative Party, has called PM Gordon Brown one of the "old politic" and called himself "a change in the right direction", an homage to McCain/Obama! So the whole thing lives on...
I'm glad the election is over. Only 75 days until we kick Dubya out for good!
HOORAY!!! Today is definitely a good day! I'm so glad they were covering everything over there, and it's awesome that it's important all over. BTW, thanks for the B-day and Halloween wishy-boos : ) I'm excited to see you when you come home again. Oh yeah! when will that be?
