The Things
1. Book: World Without End, Ken Follett
For the second week in a row this book plagues me (not buboniclly...har har medieval joke) with its twisting plotline and rapidfire turn of events. I can't get enough, and yet its all I can do to read furiously until this book is over. Only 500 pages to go...
2. Site: Google Sites
My quiet days at work have flown since I discovered Google's new website machine. Creating a page was never easier, and I'm trialing the site by building a webpage for my book group. I've been adding in forms and voting pages, chat forums, calendars and more. You can check out my beta page here if you want to see what Google Sites is all about, or just visit their home page to create your own site. Be sure to send me a link! Dublin Book Club Google Site
3. Show: 30 Rock
Getting in bed at 8pm every night has meant a lot of reading, a lot of skyping and a lot of bit-torrenting. I've watched the entire last season of 30 Rock this week, and this morning I watched the latest episode. That show is so witty! I think between 30 Rock and Arrested Development I have all the comedy I'll ever need. And this week's episode of 30 Rock was really funny, too.
Jack: Classic Lemon maneater!
Liz: Cat noise!
Unless you saw it, that quote was prob not funny to you at all. But watch it. Then laugh with me. Not at me. :)
4. Food: Soup
I've made and eaten a whole lotta soup this week. From the lentil soup I ate until my insides were raw (fibretastic) to the Chinese chicken satay soup I had at Charming Noodle with Tessa to the minestrone I have planned for tonight and the beef and Guinness stew I'm making this weekend...it's been souptastic this week. But that's what cold(ish) winter days are for, right? In fact, this one may pop up again on next week's Things I'm About, with any luck.
5. App: iTunes Podcasts
I always listen to podcasts on the way to and from work. It passes the time and I'm able to get a lot of headlines and information in. I like to rotate my podcasts periodically to keep myself interested, the way we rotate Norah's dog toys so she doesn't grow bored with them...we have that in common I guess. Lately I've been downsizing my NPR-heavy podcast list for some more bubbly stations. Here are a few fresh ones that I have taken on board with good results this week:
- How Stuff Works podcast: From howstuffworks.com, it's witty and interesting and plys me with more fun facts than I'll ever need.
- GrammarGirl podcast: Yeah I finally succame to one of the most popular and longstanding podcasts. Also it's one with my name all over it. This morning I listened to an interesting piece on overuse of "of". It's interesting, but I think this one might even wear on me. This podcast comes off a little harpy and naggy. This lady watches every word. Be careful when you send her fanmail!
- Moth Podcast: Okay I confess I downloaded this one a few weeks ago but it's worth mentioning. It's a different story told by a storyteller every week. Most are really funny anec dotes. For example, this week's was a comedian telling a story about the time he sleepwalk-jumped out the window of a La Quinta inn "Incredible Hulk style". It had me laughing on the Luas, I'll admit!
- Dictionary.com podcast: This one covers a different word each time, ones like "snow", "golf", "Seattle", and "hammer". It explains the etymology and usage. Again, good for word dorks a la moi.
- Zencast podcast: This one is just a mellow-out podcast, good for end of day commutes. It's a relaxing, centering experience.
This weekend I am so, SO excited to be going to the Abbey Theatre to see JM Synge's "Playboy of the Western World", the famous play that drew riotous recorse on its premier in 1907 at the same theatre. The play is a piece of Irish history and the chance to see it on the Abbey stage is once-in-a-lifetime. I couldn't be more excited! Afterwards me, Tessa and Stephen are going to a Korean restuarant. Cuz.........cuz the play is enough Irishness for one day, apparently. :)
Have a good weekend!
