Christmas Markets, Marketing Christmas

Another day, another post, but in case you didn't tune in yesterday, I invite you to check out my Picasa photos (link at right) to meet some of the folks I've been spending my time with these last 7 months.

Now! The office is all a'twitter over our corporate holiday gifts this year, the ones we give to clients and partners. I, for one, do not care. However, it is in my best interest to do so, because I've been put in charge of them. So here I am, researching whiskey and wine prices on a server that blocks alcohol-related sites. Why whiskey and wine? Why, that's what you give in Ireland, silly! And don't you dare send anything otherwise, lest you upset a client with a taste for the auld sauce!

It's been cool and rainy in Dublin. Around 50 today, and high 40s for the rest of the week. I have to say, I'm excited to get home and *hopefully* see some snow! It'll get me into the Christmas spirit.

And like snow, I've recently discovered what the Irish do to get into the Christmas spirit: Christmas Markets.

In Germany and Austria ( and now Hungary, Poland and even the Czech Republic) there is a long tradition of opening stalls in town square and selling wares for Christmas. In snowy city centres all over the countries, people set up stalls to sell trinkets, roasted and baked treats, and sweet mulled wine and cider. The Irish FLOCK to Vienna, Frankfurt and other cities to shop and get into the Christmas spirit.

To me, it looks like you get the chance to meander around Santa's village at the North Pole for awhile. Isn't that amazing? Wouldn't you just burst with Christmas spirit? I am a self-proclaimed Scrooge come December, but even I'd be hardpressed to kick the crutches out from under Tiny Tim after a trip like this.

Anyway, I wish I could take a Chrsitmas Market trip, but the plane tickets go quick for these destinations, so that's that.

Well so, there's your Christmas Market lesson for the day. Good Tuesday!
