Now, how was your Halloween? Any fun plans? Any funny costumes? Halloween in Ireland is a little different from the US. For one, there are fireworks. A TON of them. And not professional, city fireworks shows; these are kids tossing 10lb fireworks up in the air. And throwing "bangers" or little fireworks at each other.
As I was walking home from work in the dark (it was dark at 5pm yesterday here), the kids were already out trick or treating, and the fireworks were in full effect. Nearly everyone was setting off a few of the big explodey ones like so:

They're illegal in Ireland, but not in the UK, so people drive to Northern Ireland to get them on the weekend before. It was great--almost like I had my 4th of July, in October!
The other thing they do differently here is set off bonfires. RAGIN bonfires. In supremely dangerous places. I saw a bonfire being set up in the dark on my walk home. It was in an empty lot between two houses. The bonfire was at least 15ft high and about 30ft wide. I am not exagerrating. It contained old sofas, mattresses, bedframes, you name it. The pièce de résistance was the street light pole stuck on top, holding up an oil-soaked bedspread. The teens who built it were all seated on old rattan furniture and love seats around the soon-to-be fire. It was basically the greatest potential for disaster I've ever seen, greater than even the Spice Girls reunion tour.
Other than that, its the same holiday over here. Kids dress up, people put out a few plastic decorations on their front porch (only on the day--you'll see no decorations out before, even on the 30th). And today all the heaps of candy are on sale in the supermarket...best part of the holiday, as far as I'm concerned.
Now, since there's no Thanksgiving over here, Christmas season will be in full effect as of today. That's two months of Christmas....yikes. If only my super-Christmas buddies Kaitlyn and Elisa were here to enjoy it! Instead it']s charms are wasted on the likes of me. Ah well. :)

ok, christmas music already started coming through on my yahoo radio about a WEEK ago. even that is a little much for this christmas fan.
ReplyDeletei feel a lot of pressure about this caption thing. give me time, i want it to be good.
umm all i have to say is the little bug is quite amazed that his marshmallow is burning. The little frog is nicely toasting his marshmallow to a golden brown, while bug likes his charbroiled, which is simply a personal choice. However i don't believe this is a personal choice on the bugs part because he looks like he might break into tears at any moment. Its possible that it was an accidental marshmallow burning. The frog is holding all the cards in this one though because he's got the marshmallows on his side...sneaky frog!
ReplyDeletei think i saw mike(from entertainment) last night at Lunas. Heidi and i went out as victorian sluts. We got lots of comments, many of which people didn't know what we were but loved the costume.
