Looky looky what came in the mail yesterday...
My Michigan absentee ballot! Just think, tonight I'm going to cast my vote, more than one month before the rest of the US does. It was cool to get such a hefty piece of Americana in the post last night, and I had to laugh at myself when I sat down to read it with a cup of Lyon's Irish tea and a nice piece of jammy brown bread. A lone moment of multiculturalism. :)
Well so I was surprised to see medicinal marijuana on the ballot in Michigan. I didn't know that was in the works! Geez, what do you think the likelihood is of people voting that in with any sizable majority? I mean, as it stands now only 10 other states have legalized med mj. I have to say, I'm pretty proud of Michigan for being so progressive.
Also on the ballot: Janet Jackson is running for a seat in local office. That's just funny.
So last night I went to the play "The Year of Magical Thinking", a one-woman, 3-act, intermissionless play about death and grief. It was a fantastic foray into a mourner's psyche, albeit a predictably heavy one. It was also rife with....cellphone ringing. OH! Never was there a more inappropriate play for a phone to ring in. Vanessa Redgrave would be there on stage, having acted herself up to a fevered pitch, hanging on the edge of some horribly tragic line, and then you'd hear the Nokia ringer. And this was despite the announced request to turn off phones before the play began! It damaged the effect of the play I have to say, and as I sat there afterward waiting for the Q&A session to begin with Redgrave, all I could hear people discuss around me were the phones, the phones, the phones!
Well but aside from the pho--er, distractions, the play was very well done and a treat to see. If you have a chance to read any Joan Diden, the playwright, I could say from this play that I would recommend her on her strength of skill.
Tomorrow brings the second installment of the Dublin Theatre Festival, this time with a viewing of the Irish play "Hedda Gabler" at the Gate Theatre. This festival is like a mini-vacation for me! So many fun events to enjoy from playwrights from around the world! Man do I love the THEE-ah-tahh!!
Have a great Wednesday!
